After completing a moon mosaic and converting same to Greyscale, most of the time I was annoyed about the ugly squares protruding from the moon: a result of the seaming and stitching process. Then Cor 'Registax' Berrevoets told me how to use IRIS to get rid of all that noise.
For my moon mosaics I used the following procedure:
- Save your final image in a separate directory (e.g. temp)
- Rename to eg Moon1.bmp
- Load into IRIS via File/conversion as follows:
- name: Moon
- as you want black/white select the radio button for black and white
- panchro name: temporary output file name
- number: 1 (because you only have one final frame)
- OK
- Now you have a FIT file with the output name you just selected
- Use left mouse button to select (box) part of the area you want to erase
- Processing menu: Offset Normalisation of a sequence
- Generic name: M
- Normalisation 0
- Output name: whatever you want
- Number of images: 1
- Chckmark box selected area
- OK
- Surprise: the noise has disappeared!!!!
- Redo for other areas
- When ready: save as BMP and you are ready ...
