Dear Group,
                    Jan and I have been studying the available depth of image ( faintest star magnitude) capability of the  Tal - 2M 6 inch reflector @f/4.6 with Baader IR Blocking filter and Contrast booster coupled to the Philips Vesta Pro SC1.0 cooled camera.
One of Jan's latest avi's of M57, which was taken with K3CCDTools, was used for this exercise.
 
Although similar studies have been published before in the forum, for other set-ups, We think this may be of help to "newbies" in the group who are interested in what similar equipment will accomplish :-)
 
We were interested in how the depth of image increased with the number of stacked exposures and whether there was an optimum number of image stacks when taking images of M57 and the surrounding region.
 
Jan's accurate PE and Polar alignment allowed good quality 30 sec exposures to be regularly captured over long periods (hours), but just how many exposures was the optimum to create a good result and at what point does increasing the number of stacks become academic.
 
Attached is an excel sheet that summarises our findings together with a logarithmic curve fit showing that the limit is around 16.8 and one hour is probably long enough.
 
The interesting point is that the central 15.3 Mag star in M57 was clearly imaged in around 10 minutes of 30 sec exposures and a 16.6 Mag star in the same field of view was clearly imaged in  35 minutes. The main advantage of more frame summation was the gradual improvement in the colour rendition of M57 and of course the available choice of frames to work with.
 
Post Processing details:
The avi was post processed in Astrovideo ( I have more experience with this package than K3CCDtools) as a series of manual summations using the "tools" ... process avi method....with progressively increasing stack size after carefully noting the frame number of the few exposures that had trailing or other artefacts ( satellites etc).
We then used photometric images of the region from previous studies on the internet and also from software to estimate the faintest magnitude reached in each batch.
This involved pushing each stack, using FitsX, to show the faintest stars, which didn't do any favours to M57 ( it became very over exposed) but that wasn't the point of the exercise, so I haven't attached any of the images.
However, Jan's well balanced image of M57 can be seen at http://home.hetnet.nl/mr_6/2/dukoyy/firmament/Astro/main_screen.html
 
Although this took quite some time to carry out it can now be used as a "ready reckoner" for any other target.
